Applique

Applied cloth or needlework.  Also a controversial technique used in woodcarving from around the mid 18th. Century where the wood is scroll sawed out, carved and applied to a backing surface in order to save time and material -  rather than to carve out from the solid.  Here are examples from Claydon House, the Victoria and Albert Museum and the governors mansion in Utah
